SHEILAH CLEARY INTERNATIONAL BEAD ARTIST WILL BE AT BEAD DREAMS

Sheilah ClearySheilah Cleary has been a devoted craft person all her life. Her needle art works have won numerous awards and her authentically reproduced Baltimore Album quilt was judged the finest of its class in several national competitions. But, by far, her best-known creations - and her absolute favorite handwork - involve wire and bead design.

She is thrilled to have taught her techniques in all sections of the US mainland, Hawaii and in many foreign countries including Singapore, Australia, and Japan…where she is called a Sensei of Sensei or a master teacher of master teachers. She is also thrilled to have done design work for the president and founder of the Miyuki Shoji company. During these trips, She has had the opportunity to conduct classes for their senior instructors and representatives in Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima. Her work has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles and she frequently contributes to BEADWORK/INTERWEAVE publications.

Fiber Fantasy Kumihimo Necklace

Do you have a truly special lampwork bead that you’ve been saving for a truly special project? Or is there one that you’ve been dying to buy? If so, that time has finally come! This is the class for which you’ve been waiting. You will learn to make a flat rope of assorted fibers and intermittent holes that - after including some carefully selected strands and decorative beads to showcase that special bead even more - will make for an extraordinary piece. Some kumihimo experience will be helpful but is not necessary.

A kumihimo “lace open stitch” fiber necklace

Fiber Fantasy Kumihimo NecklaceSupply list:

  • A marudai braiding table
  • 8 bobbins in 85 grams or 80 grams
  • A counter weight bag with loose weights (bolts or coins) or several size fishing weights. The weights should be ½ of the total weight of all of the bobbins
  • Approximately 18 strands assorted yarns that are 3 yards long
  • Approximately 6 yards of C-Lon cord to compliment the yarns
  • 2 end caps
  • 2 eye pins at least 2 inches long
  • 1 clasp
  • 1 special lamp work bead
  • 1 spacer for below the special bead
  • 10 grams size 8 beads to string through the kumihimo braid
  • 13 flower shaped beads for the tassels
  • Approximately 40 size 11 and size 8 seed beads plus some 4 or 5mm beads for the tassel area
  • Approximately 40 decorative beads for the loose thread area. The colors should compliment the special bead. These can be 4mm beads, teardrops, balls, leaves, as you choose.

  • 25 grams light colored size 11 seed beads
  • 25 grams dark colored size 11 seed beads
  • 3 very special lampwork beads
  • Assorted Bali spacers
  • 2 colors to match, size D Nymo
  • 2 pewter end cones
  • 2 eye pins
  • 2 jump rings
  • S hook closure
  • Beading needle
  • 13 no tangle plastic bobbins
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Beading mat
  • Tape measure
  • Hypo glue
  • Wire cutter
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Marudai braiding table
  • 12 bobbins 80 or 85 grams each
  • Bag of some type for the counter weights, usually a small leather drawstring bag. This can be made by cutting a circle of leather about 8” diameter and punching holes every 2 inches and running a shoelace or strip of leather through the holes
  • Weights for the bag. The weights should be loose, as some of the weight will be removed during the braiding process. This may be fishing weights, coins, bolts, etc. and should include at least ½ roll of quarters
  • A large paper clip or “S” hook from a hardware store
  • One smooth chop stick or sharpened pencil

The weights in the counterweight bag must equal ½ of the total weight of the 12 bobbins. Be certain that your weights will fit into your bag.
Weights that are heavy for their size are best.
